Man United manager Erik ten Hag could deploy one of his key players, Lisandro Martinez, in two surprising new positions, according to journalist Steve Bates.
Man United have so far made two new signings in the 2024 summer transfer window. They are striker Joshua Zirkzee and centre-back Leny Yoro, who arrived from Bologna and Lille respectively. The Red Devils are also keen on PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte and have been linked with a swap deal for Aaron Wan-Bissaka for Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries.
But a new report claims that if the above deals cannot be completed, a current first-team star could be asked to play two different roles next season. According to journalist Steve Bates of GiveMeSport, Lisandro Martinez is the “chosen one”.
The signing of 18-year-old defender Yoro is seen as a major step forward and he is seen as the perfect partner for Martinez. However, Bates insists that the United board feel Martinez would be more useful at left-back and in defensive midfield.
With Victor Lindelof likely to leave, United are still looking for another centre-back – with Matthijs de Ligt and Jarrad Branthwaite reportedly top targets. That would leave United with no shortage of centre-backs and Martinez could be moved into a different role.
The Red Devils struggled at left-back last season, with Tyrell Malacia sidelined for the entire campaign and Luke Shaw struggling for fitness. As such, Martinez could be used more at left-back.
In addition, MU will not buy Sofyan Amrabat outright and are having trouble signing defensive midfielders, so Martinez is likely to be used in this position. This also allows Kobbie Mainoo to move up higher.
Lisandro Martinez is an extremely versatile player and can play many roles in the defensive area. With his limited height, he will not be really effective as a center-back due to the high-ball style of play in England. So, maybe playing as a full-back or defensive midfielder will help this player reach the next level in his career?
