Newcastle is said to be ready to recruit coach Mauricio Pochettino if Eddie Howe takes the England job.
Howe is wondering whether to stay at Newcastle or accept the offer to lead the Three Lions. The Mirror claim that Newcastle executives want a quick decision, with Pochettino their No. 1 target if a new manager is needed.
The Magpies’ opening Premier League match against Southampton will take place in less than a month, on August 17. Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi, who were big fans of Howe, have both left the club.
But new sporting director Paul Mitchell is the man who brought Pochettino to Southampton and could see this as the perfect opportunity for a reunion. Mitchell and Pochettino even worked together at Tottenham.
Howe admitted that he always had the ambition to become England coach. The Sun revealed that he spoke about his dream of leading the Three Lions in an interview before Gareth Southgate resigned.
The English Football Association (FA) considers Howe to be the leading candidate for the “hot seat” after parting ways with Southgate. Pochettino himself is also an FA selection, alongside Graham Potter and Lee Carsley.
Newcastle was unable to win tickets to the European Cup next season despite finishing 7th in the 2023/24 Premier League. The reason is because MU won the FA Cup championship and won tickets to the Europa League, pushing the 6th ranked team, Chelsea, down to the Conference League.
The Magpies have not been able to spend heavily in the transfer markets because of the limitations of the Financial Fair Play Law. But in the summer of 2024, whoever sits on the coaching bench will be supported by the Saudi owners when they have partly met the financial requirements.
